After successfully gaining your PPL, many choose to add the night rating qualification allowing you to fly at night, opening up many more flying opportunities.
Night rating is a fantastic addition to your PPL License. You’ll be able to fly after sunset, enjoying the city lights below or the sunset over the coast and countryside.
The Night rating course is a minimum of five hours. There are no exams and there is no flight test involved with the Night rating.
On completion of the night rating, you will be entitled to fly between official night and official day (30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise).
Please contact us for pre-entry requirements and current prices.
After successfully gaining your PPL, you may wish to add the Restricted Instrument Rating (IRR) to train you how to deal with adverse weather conditions during the flight or when coming in to land. The unpredictable nature of the UK weather has made the IR(R) course a very popular and important rating to have.
An applicant for an IMC Rating/IR(Restricted) must have:
25 hours total experience as pilot of aeroplanes following PPL(A) issue and which may include the training for the UK IMC rating
10 hours as PIC of aeroplanes to include 5 hours as PIC of aeroplanes on cross country flights

Training for the IR(R) will consist of –

– Written examination
– The pilot must have completed 25 hours post-PPL flying before the rating can be issued

“A big thank you to everyone at Saxon Air. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The afternoon turned out to be just right for the flight, and I was able to pick out various landmarks that I know. The Goody Bag is a delight and I shall be wearing my t-shirt tonight at Pilates, no doubt there will be lots of interest. Thank you all.”
